When the Song Doesn’t Fit: Lessons from Big Feet and Key Changes

Here’s a random fun fact about me: I have gigantic feet. We’re talking size 10 or 11—depending on the brand—and I’m only 5'7". Not short, but definitely not suiting up for the WNBA either.
As a teenager, this felt like a big deal. Most of the girls I knew had size 7 feet and could easily find cute shoes on sale. Meanwhile, I was stuck digging through whatever was left in the bigger sizes. I used to feel like something was wrong with me.
Now, I know better. Having big feet isn’t a flaw—it’s just my size. And that realization has given me a whole new perspective, especially when it comes to voice coaching and speech therapy.
Your Voice Isn’t the Problem—The Song Might Be
So many of my voice students come to me saying,
“I can’t sing this song. I must be doing something wrong.”
They’ve heard others perform it effortlessly and assume their voice just doesn’t measure up.
But here's the truth: It’s not about being a bad singer. It’s about the song not being the right fit.The key, the range, or the original arrangement might not work for your voice—and that’s okay!
Why Key Changes Are Game-Changing
Every time I introduce a key change—whether we go up or down—I see it: a complete shift in how students see themselves. Their confidence grows. Their sound opens up. The tension disappears. It’s like slipping into the perfect pair of shoes.
So if you’ve been struggling with a song, don’t blame your voice. Maybe the song just isn’t your size.
